Who Is Michael Franzese?
Michael Franzese (born May 27, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American former mobster who once served as a caporegime — a rank equivalent to captain — in the notorious Colombo crime family in New York City . He is the son of former Colombo underboss Sonny Franzese, one of the most feared figures in organized crime history.
Before his deep involvement in the mob, Franzese was actually on a very different path. He was enrolled in a pre-med program at Hofstra University but eventually dropped out, drawn into the world his father inhabited . During the 1980s, Franzese became one of the most powerful and wealthy young mob figures in the country, generating hundreds of millions of dollars through a massive gasoline tax scheme that became one of the biggest fraud operations in American history.
Then, Franzese did the unthinkable: he walked away. He pleaded guilty to racketeering charges, exited the mob, and renounced his former life entirely . This decision was nearly unprecedented in the history of the American Mafia — leaving “the life” voluntarily and living to tell about it.
Today, Michael Franzese has completely reinvented himself. He is a motivational speaker, author, YouTuber, and Christian evangelist who travels the country sharing his story of transformation . He speaks on topics ranging from business and corporate ethics to faith, family issues, spiritual warfare, and youth mentorship . His YouTube channel has amassed millions of subscribers, where he discusses everything from his mob past to current events, finance, and personal development.
Where Does Michael Franzese Live?
After leaving the mob and building a new life, Michael Franzese settled far from the streets of Brooklyn where he grew up. He currently resides in Orange County, California, specifically in the upscale coastal community of Newport Beach .
The move to Southern California was a deliberate choice. Newport Beach offered Franzese and his family distance from his former life on the East Coast, along with a peaceful, family-oriented environment. The warm weather, ocean views, and relaxed California lifestyle stand in stark contrast to the tension and danger that once defined his daily existence.
Newport Beach is one of the most prestigious and desirable communities in all of Southern California. Known for its stunning coastline, world-class dining, excellent schools, and affluent neighborhoods, it’s a place where many successful entrepreneurs, celebrities, and professionals choose to call home.
Michael Franzese House: A Look at His Newport Beach Residence
His Newport Beach residence was purchased for approximately $2.89 million . To put that in perspective, in 2021, the median home price in Newport Beach was above $3.5 million, meaning Franzese actually paid below the median price for the area . This speaks volumes about his changed priorities — he chose value over status.
The home is nestled in one of Southern California’s most prestigious coastal communities and stands as a testament to his remarkable transformation . It’s described as a property that represents more than just luxury living — it’s a symbol of redemption and success . The Corona Del Mar area of Newport Beach, where his property is located, is known for its stunning coastal retreats that blend elegance with breathtaking ocean views .
The residence is designed for comfortable family living rather than showmanship. It reflects Franzese’s philosophy that true wealth isn’t about gold-plated fixtures or sprawling estates — it’s about peace, security, and quality time with loved ones. This is a man who once had access to virtually unlimited illicit wealth, yet now finds fulfillment in a relatively modest (by Newport Beach standards) family home.
His lifestyle shift from mafia wealth to a calm, family-focused life is one of the most compelling personal transformation stories in modern American culture . The house itself embodies that journey — tasteful, well-appointed, and grounded.
From Mob Life to Motivational Speaking
What makes Michael Franzese’s story so compelling is the completeness of his transformation. He didn’t just leave organized crime — he became an outspoken advocate against it. Through his books, speaking engagements, and massive online presence, he educates millions about the realities of mob life, the importance of making ethical choices, and the power of faith and family.
His appearances in documentaries like Netflix’s “Fear City” have introduced his story to entirely new generations . He regularly collaborates with other popular content creators and podcasters, making him one of the most recognized former mob figures in the world.
Conclusion
Michael Franzese’s journey from Brooklyn mob captain to California family man is nothing short of extraordinary. His Newport Beach home perfectly encapsulates his values today — comfort, family, and purposeful living over flashy excess.
