Rare Albino Giant Panda Cub “Snow” Born at Beijing Zoo in Historic First

“We are thrilled to announce that our giant pandas Yaya and Fu Xing welcomed a healthy newborn cub a few days ago! This extraordinary baby is albino — the first albino giant panda ever born in a zoo, and only the second ever recorded worldwide!

The zoo also revealed that the cub has been named Snow, or 白熊猫 (White Panda) in Chinese, due to its striking all-white fur and rare pink eyes.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Discovery

Snow’s unusual appearance is caused by albinism, an extremely rare genetic condition that reduces or completely prevents melanin production in the body. As a result, the cub was born with snowy white fur and light pink eyes instead of the traditional black-and-white coloring associated with giant pandas.

Wildlife experts and researchers around the world are already expressing excitement over the rare birth, as it provides an unprecedented opportunity to study albinism in giant pandas under carefully monitored professional care.

Before Snow, only one albino giant panda had ever been documented — a wild panda photographed in 2019 in Sichuan Province’s Wolong National Nature Reserve. Snow is now recognized as the first albino panda ever born in a zoological environment.

Meet the Parents: Yaya and Fu Xing

The cub’s mother, Yaya (娅娅), was born at Beijing Zoo on August 3, 2000. She became internationally known after spending nearly two decades at the Memphis Zoo in the United States before returning to China around 2023. Since her return, Yaya has reportedly adjusted well to her home environment and is now showing strong maternal behavior while caring for Snow.

The father, Fu Xing (福星), was born on June 25, 2017, and is considered one of Beijing Zoo’s younger and more energetic pandas. Zoo officials say he has played an important role in the zoo’s breeding program focused on maintaining healthy genetic diversity among captive giant pandas.

Beijing Zoo’s Legacy in Panda Conservation
